Why is Juvederm causing a headache?

brunette-woman-in-blue-smilingDuring a training session I received a Juvederm Ultra XC treatment from Richard Burgmeier MD of the Perfect Skin Laser center in Scottsdale Arizona. I was eager to get a treatment and wanted either Voluma XC for my cheeks or Juvederm Ultra Plus XC for my lips.  Dr. Burgmeier recommended a Juvederm Ultra XC treatment on the hallows of my temples instead, since my lips were recently injected and my cheeks are naturally plump.  My temples weren’t extremely hallow, but definitely visible and defined. I had never received any treatment specifically for my temples, so I was excited to try it out.

Before the treatment I was numbed with a topical numbing cream containing Benzocaine, Lidocaine, and Tetracaine.  The numbing cream took about 10 minutes to make me completely numb.  Dr. Burgmeier prepared the Juvederm by adding some saline, which makes the product smoother and distribute more evenly in the temples.woman-snow-winter-portrait-40503-large

The first injection felt so strange, it didn’t hurt at all but I could hear the needle going through my tissue.  With most injections through muscle, you can hear a crunching or popping sound as the needle gets deeper.  While he was injecting the Juvederm, I felt pressure on my temple, as if someone was pushing in on it with their thumb.

The injection on my other temple was a little harder for me.  While Dr. Burgmeier was pushing the needle in, I started talking and immediately heard an awful crunching and popping sound.   He warned me not to talk because moving my jaw would cause the muscles around the needle to move and be scratched by the needle.  I quickly took his advice and shut my mouth and looked straight ahead.  The Dr said that during injections on the temples it is important not to move or talk, because the temples are such a delicate area.

After treatment, I was instantly happy with my results!  My temples weren’t noticable anymore and my face looked younger and less bony.  The pressure from the fillers was uncomfortable the rest of the evening.  I didn’t bruise at all, which surprised me because of how deep the injections were.  I followed  Proper Pre Treatment and Post Treatment Steps for fillers.  The next morning my head was pounding and my temples were sensitive, I couldn’t hold my phone to my head.  The pain went away slowly over the next 2 days.  Despite the awful headaches after treatment, the Juvederm in my temples is still one of my favorite treatments!  I will definitely be going back to Dr. Burgmeier when this Juvederm wears off in about 9 months.
